Denmark’s goal was born from a throw-in. Slovenia’s in a corner kick.

This may not have been a European Championship classic but it did underline how both of these teams, who face England over the space over the next week, put a special attacking onus on set-pieces.

There’s more than one way to score a goal, but few more straightforward and effective as sticking it into the mixer for the biggest players to latch onto.

This is a situation where England manager Gareth Southgate will surely miss the aerial ability of Harry Maguire, whose absence has left the defence looking notably shorter.

You’re a 21-year-old striker eliciting the attentions of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United.

You’ve just signed a lucrative new contract with your current club (RB Leipzig). You’re the most promising player on your national team. You’re making your debut at the European Championships…. And, unfortunately, you hardly see anything of the ball.

Benjamin Sesko has definitely had more enjoyable days in recent months than this one against Denmark. By the 65th minute he had touched the ball just 18 times, and had not done so at all within meaningful range of the penalty area.

While Kek’s “stay compact and the counter-attack” plan has merit, they will need to find a way to force opposition teams into making more mistakes – and get their best attacker more involved – if they are to progress.

Sunday marked 1,100 days since Christian Eriksen collapsed at Copenhagen’s Parken stadium during a Euro 2020 game against Finland after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Eriksen’s physical recovery is nothing short of a miracle, and the fact that he managed to resume his football career at the top level is a marvel.

He had already played at a World Cup since that traumatic afternoon in the Danish capital, but he did not score in Qatar. Today, against Slovenia, his moment arrived.

It was the 42nd goal Eriksen had scored for his country (he is now tied for fourth in the all time goalscoring records) and surely the most emotional. It certainly prompted ecstatic celebrations among the red wedge of the Stuttgart Arena, and millions watching around the world.

It was the kind of moment that feels made for a Hollywood feelgood movie.

Three years since he almost died in a European Championship match in his home country, Christian Eriksen scored Denmark’s opening goal of Euro 2024.

It was not enough to secure victory, but was still one of the most heartwarming sub-plots of this tournament so far.

With time ticking down, Slovenia boss Matjaz Kek makes a double change to perhaps wind the clock down, taking off front two Sesko and Sporar and bringing on defender David Brekalo and midfielder Jasmin Kurtic.

And their appearances only last a second or two as...

One Denmark fan, with 'Juliassen' on his back, stands atop of the hoardings at the front of the stand with his back to the action and facing his fellow supporters.

He's holding a megaphone in his hands to help direct the chants.

At the other end of the stadium in Stuttgart, Slovenia fans are bouncing up and down with their shirts off like they're on a trampoline of euphoria. They're loving it.

90+1' Denmark 1-1 Slovenia

There are four minutes added on to the 90 already played.

Benjamin Sesko has room outside the box, is desperate to pull the trigger but is very well pressured by Christian Norgaard.

He works it out to Karnicnik, who lets fly from well outside the box... miles over. A bit of a Sunday League decision there, albeit understandable.

90' Denmark 1-1 Slovenia

With a small c, that is. Kasper Hjulmand drags off his namesake, the booked Morten, and brings on defensively-minded midfielder Thomas Delaney on in his place.

87' Denmark 1-1 Slovenia

We're into the 87th minute of the match. That middle period of the match has absolutely flown by. Time flies when you're having fun, eh?

Denmark have lost their composure here. They give away a needless free-kick in midfield... cleared.

Sporar swings a cross in from the right, Benjamin Verbic heads it wide, but goes down holding his face after the challenge from Norgaard. Replays show there was absolutely nothing in it, and VAR agrees.

83' Denmark 1-1 Slovenia

A few minutes ago, some Slovenia changes: forward Zan Celar on for winger Jan Mlakar and Jon Gorenc Stankovic on for Timi Elsnik in central midfield, straight swap.

Denmark brought Joakim Maehle on at left wing-back to replace Victor Kristiansen, then moments ago replaced strike duo Rasmus Hojlund and Jonas Wind with Yussuf Poulsen and Kasper Dolberg, plus Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Christian Norgaard of Brentford.

Celar picks up a booking not long after coming on for a foul to end a counter-attack.

82' Denmark 1-1 Slovenia

Slovenia are right in this match now.

Sporar gets in down the right, dogged play, and lashes it towards goal from a tight angle. I think it was going wide but Kasper pushes it out for a corner, then catches the corner.

Slovenia took time to wake up. First Andraz Sporar's header goes wide from a free-kick routine. and then a long-range effort from Sesko hit the woodwork.

The pressure looked to evaporated before full-back Erik Janza rifled home a wonderful shot after a corner kick.

78' Denmark 1-1 Slovenia

Seconds earlier, Benjamin Sesko showed why he is one of the most promising and highly coveted young players in Europe. He latched onto a loose ball outside the penalty area and smashed it with incredible power and placement off the right-hand post. Kasper Schmeichel was nowhere near it.

Eventually, it was put out for a corner. Under not much pressure, the beanpole centre-half Jannik Vestergaard, all two metres tall of him, couldn't get more than a flicked header on the delivery, sending it to the edge of the box.

There, Erik Janza, No 13, got a big moment of luck as he made lovely contact with it on the half-volley. It may have been going in, but took a deflection off Morten Hjulmand and flew into the net.

It was only a slight change of direction but enough that Schmeichel could only watch it go in. Big knee-slide, Denmark heads in hands. 1-1 and 15 minutes or so left to find a winner!

What a goal! Erik Janza with it!

Slovenia are level and now this game has lift-off!

76' Denmark 1-0 Slovenia

Another foul on Sesko, this time by Andersen, who grabs him from behind, leads to a free-kick on the Slovenian left.

Left-back Erik Janza of Górnik Zabrze bends it in wonderfully, such a dangerous cross. Andraz Sporar can only steer it wide.

They've had their chances, Slovenia!

74' Denmark 1-0 Slovenia

There have been lots of niggly little fouls on Slovenia's star (outfield) man, striker Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig. It's clearly a ploy to limit his influence with fouls that don't quite meet the threshold for yellow cards.

Sesko has been shackled well so far, fairly or unfairly, and hasn't had a touch in Denmark's penalty area yet.

Denmark have had 30 to Slovenia's seven, by the way.
