A soft, gentle, right-hand reef/point that is popular with beginners and longboarders, Capitola is a staple of the Santa Cruz surf scene, and has the crowds to prove it (especially in summer).

Manresa Beach for Uncrowded Waves

Manresa State Beach is located in southern Santa Cruz County, in the town of Watsonville, and is the perfect place to surf if you're looking for uncrowded waves in Santa Cruz. Manresa is a mile-long sandy stretch of beach break, with countless places to surf along the beach.

Capitola Beach is the most protected of all the inlets that stretch west between Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay. It's the most beginner-friendly of the whole lot, with the possible exception of Cowell's Beach. The take-offs are stretched down the whole beachfront, and the waves are mellow as a marshmallow.

Surfers have been racing from all over the world to California's famous Mavericks Beach, to catch huge waves brought by a storm battering the US West Coast. Waves up to 70ft (21 meters) have been ridden at the beach, which has become a legendary location for surfers.

Somewhat protected from the prevailing southwest wind, it's a safe, gentle spot to learn or enjoy surfing. There are year-round lifeguard services, good facilities and decent parking.

Several locations on Santa Cruz Island offer good surfing. Generally, the north shore is best during the northwest swells of winter/spring and the south shore is best during the south swells of summer/fall.
