Obituary Preview: Elise (Lee) Bradley Mackay of Locust Valley, NY, daughter of the late Elise Cavanagh Bradley and the late Thomas A. Bradley, Jr, died peacefully at home on March 15, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Lee attended Green Vale School in Glen Head and the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Noroton, Ct. She made her debut in 1964 at a supper dance hosted by her parents at Tabhill. Lee graduated from Connecticut College in 1968 where she studied Art History. She had a lifelong passion for the Arts and enjoyed attending ballet, theatre, opera and visiting museums.

Lee had a career in real estate in Locust Valley for over forty years. She worked with Piping Rock Associates and her last affiliation was with Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, where she was a highly regarded associate broker.

In 1990, Lee married Patrick H. Mackay. Together they traveled the world... in some cases to see one of their racehorses run in Dubai or Paris; or for a shooting trip; or just to explore and experience their favorite countries. Lee loved the outdoors... horseback riding, golf, salmon fishing, shooting and gardening. She owned many Labrador retrievers over the years and could often be seen walking with one of them. A very accomplished rider, Lee hunted with the Meadow Brook Hounds until they disbanded in 1970. She also competed in horse shows including the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden and the Piping Rock Horse Show.Lee was a very good golfer, having benefitted from her parents' coaching at a young age. She was a member of the Women's Long Island Golf Association for over fifty years; and won several tournaments including the Pinehurst Low Gross with Hope Lapsley in 2005, Closing Day Ruth Torgerson Leffler Trophy in 2007, and the Davis Cup in 1991 and 2002. The Davis Cup is a family tournament and over a period of about thirty years, Lee played with her parents, sister and brother-in-law, aunt, cousins and her husband's nephew. Lee was the Club Rep for Piping Rock through the 2021 season, helping to set up both the Opening Day and Davis Cup tournaments for many years.

Lee was also an avid gardener. She joined the North Country Garden Club in 1993 and was an-extremely involved member. For many years, Lee chaired the Membership Committee and Civic Projects Committee. She was a two-time winner of the President's Cup in 2004 and 2014; and also won the coveted Adele R. Norris Award for Best Artistic Arrangement as a provisional member in 1994. For her many contributions as an invaluable member of the club, Lee received NCGV's Certificate of Appreciation in 2014. Lee designed and nurtured her own garden for almost 30 years and in 2023 NCGC recognized the beautiful landscape she had created by choosing it as a "pop-up" garden. On a specific day that summer, her garden was open to members who wished to stroll through and enjoy.

Lee is survived by her husband Patrick H. Mackay, sisters Belle C. Bradley and Renee B. Bradley, her aunt Sara Cavanagh Schwartz and nephew and niece Christopher and Wendy Merz. Lee will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

                      Dolores "Maureen" Aquilino - September 24, 1935 - February 12, 2024

                      Departed: 02/12/2024 (Oyster Bay)

Obituary Preview: Dolores Maureen Aquilino, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away on Monday, February 12th in Reisterstown, MD, at the age of 88. She was a feisty and spunky lady that adored her family more than anything in the world. She

will be greatly missed each and every day. Dolores, or “Maureen” as she was known to friends and family, was born on September 24th, 1935 in Larksville, PA. She graduated from Larksville High School and remained in the area until the very memorable year of 1958. This was the year Maureen would go on to marry the love of her life, Louis Aquilino of Oyster Bay, NY. This little town on Long Island became the place her family called home for many, many years. Prior to starting her family, Maureen worked as an Administrative Assistant for Republic Aviation from 1958 until 1964. During this time, Maureen and Louis became icons within the Oyster Bay community as they regularly attended community events and supported local causes. Her presence was always known as she made it a point to make everyone in the room feel special. She made life-long friends in Oyster Bay - the kind of friends that make you proud and stick with you until the end. Although, as proud as she was of the life they had been building in Oyster Bay, it wasn’t complete until her only son, Timothy Aquilino, was born in 1965. At this point, she shifted her focus to being a full-time mom to take care of Tim as he grew up. Of all the things she achieved in life,

Tim was, and always will be, her most proud accomplishment. When Maureen wasn’t busy taking care of her son, she spent as much time as she could doing the things she loved. Whether it was watching nearly every Yankees game on TV (and often yelling during the games), tearing it up on the dance floor with Louis, or regularly attending and volunteering her time as a member of St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church, Maureen always had a zest for life that was truly palpable. As life moved forward, so did Maureen and her family. Her son, Tim, began his family in Maryland, while Maureen and Louis spent a lot of time traveling between Oyster Bay, NY and Mountain Top, PA where they purchased and renovated a beautifully quaint mountain home. After many years of hosting friends and family in their homes, they decided to officially retire and relocate to somewhere warm; Longs, South Carolina. Just as they had done in New York and Pennsylvania, Maureen and Louis quickly became a staple in their community and built new friendships around every corner. She loved her new life in South Carolina, especially when her family came to visit - and at the end of the day, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was what made

her the happiest. Maureen was the daughter of the late William Fisher and Theresa Fisher. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Vincent Aquilino, and her 10 siblings, Charlie, Joseph, William, Thomas, James, Jack, Mary, Helen, Theresa and Anne. She is survived by her sister, Joan Brehm (Englewood, FL); son, Timothy Michael Aquilino (Woodbine, MD) and her daughter-in-law, Polly Ann Aquilino (Woodbine, MD); her grandchildren, Joshua Davis Kidwell (Portland, ME), Timothy Michael Aquilino Jr. (Woodbine, MD), and Haley Carol Good (Taneytown, MD); her great-granddaughter, June Masi Kidwell

(Portland, ME); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to honor Maureen at Devine Funeral Home in Oyster Bay, NY on Monday, February 19th for visitation from 2-4 PM, immediately followed by the

                      service at 4-5 PM.

                      Audrey Kathleen Sommerhalter - August 22, 1929 - February 10, 2024

                      Departed: 02/10/2024 (Oyster Bay)

Obituary Preview: Audrey Sommerhalter passed away peacefully on February 10, 2024 at the age of 94. Audrey was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She moved to Oyster Bay when she married Fred Sommerhalter in 1950 and lived on Kellogg Street for over 60 years. She loved her home and was proud to show off her entertaining and decorating skills at parties, cookouts and holiday gatherings. A talented artist, she displayed her beautiful work in her home. She learned to sew and had her own alterations business, as well as sewing costumes for her church’s cantata and running a clothing ministry. She loved to learn. In later years she became proficient on her computer where she ‘surfed the web’, kept up with friends and family and made new friends. She loved her friends; she was the last of an Oyster Bay generation who were like family to her. She loved her beloved Scotties and collected anything and everything relating to the breed. But most of all, she loved her family. She and Fred created a beautiful home where they raised their children, Laura and Fred. Every holiday was spent with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and later grandchildren gathered around her table. This gave her so much joy. Audrey is predeceased by her husband, Fred and brother Thomas Finn. Audrey is survived by her children Laura Cacciato (Rick), Fred Sommerhalter (JoAnn); grandchildren Richard Cacciato, Matthew Sommerhalter (Kristin), Jessica Ruiz (Thomas), Suzanne Beirne (Joe); and seven great-grandchildren. A loving, generous and devout person, Audrey will be remembered and missed by anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Arrangements are private. Donations in her name can be made to your favorite charity.

                      Departed: 12/31/2023 (Oyster Bay)

Obituary Preview: Jeanne Adams Duhamel, of Oyster Bay, NY, aged 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of December 31, 2023. She was surrounded by loved ones. Jeanne was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 23,1940 and was a proud lifelong New Yorker. Afflicted with polio at the age of 3, she made a clear distinction that she was a survivor not a victim of polio. When doctors told her that she would never walk again, she tapped into her fierce determination, loaded her baby stroller with bricks, strengthened her legs, and proved them wrong. She went on to help her parents raise her six younger siblings. While she was somewhat physically restricted by polio, she never accepted any physical limitations. That stubborn determination carried her through many difficulties throughout her life and she was the true definition of a fighter. She was ecstatic when a vaccine was discovered which protected her siblings and future generations from the virus. As a result, Jonas Salk enjoyed celebrity status in her family. After attending Catholic University, she began her teaching career. Through teaching she met her future husband, Anthony L. Duhamel. Upon their marriage and despite the fact that she earned more than her husband, she was required to resign her teaching position since rules at the time did not allow women to work in the same district as their husbands. She went on to raise seven loving children and in an effort to make things better for them and all children, she felt it was her civic duty to get involved with the Public Library Board and later the local School Board. As a devout Catholic, she also felt called to teach CCD and ran that religious education program for St. Dominic’s during the 1970’s. After the birth of her 7th child, Jeanne was proud to start her teaching career again and with a big heart and a lot of compassion, she tutored teens on suspension in the Huntington Public school system. Later in life she found great joy volunteering at the Oyster Festival and local polling stations during elections. She also enjoyed working at the St. Ignatius Jesuit Retreat house at Inisfada. Throughout her life, Jeanne was proudest of her children and grandchildren. Jeanne was predeceased by her parents, James and Marie Adams, and her siblings James Adams, Michael Adams, and Patrice Wolf. She is survived by her siblings Peter Adams (Janice), Maryanne Bonom (Neil) and Christorpher Adams, her seven children, Margaret Duhamel, Kristine Giacobbe (Dean), Kerri Ward (George), James Duhamel (Cia), Michael Duhamel, Kathryn Duhamel (Dan), Colleen Reisner (Dave) and eight grandchildren, Sophia Catalina, Rich Catalina, Nick Catalina, Cole Giacobbe, Jack Giacobbe,

Gracen Ward, George Ward, Jr. and Henry Eisenberg.

A Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Dominic R.C.Chapel on January 4th. 2024 with Burial at The Green Wood Cemetery.

                      Frequently Asked Questions

                      What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

                      Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who may want to attend the funeral or send condolences. They can also provide closure and help the grieving process for loved ones.

                      Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral service, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to have control over how they are remembered. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars, depending on the length and features of the obituary.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that includes biographical information and often photos.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a great way to celebrate the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How do I announce a private funeral or memorial service in an obituary?

You can simply state "Private funeral services will be held" or "A private memorial service will be held at a later date." This lets readers know that the service is not open to the public.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer donations to a favorite charity or cause instead of flowers. Be sure to include the charity's name and address or website in the obituary.

How do I write an obituary for someone who has no immediate family?

In this case, focus on the person's friends, colleagues, or community connections. You can also highlight their accomplishments, hobbies, or volunteer work.

What if I need to make corrections to an already-published obituary?

Contact the newspaper or online platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible. They may be able to make corrections or issue a revised version.

Can I republish an obituary from years ago?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you may be able to republish an old obituary. Check with the newspaper or online platform first.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit your local library's genealogy section. Many websites also offer access to historical obituaries for a fee.

What is an online obituary guest book?

An online guest book allows friends and family to leave messages, condolences, and memories of the deceased. These can be especially helpful for those who cannot attend a funeral in person.

How long do online obituaries stay available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.

Can I create a video obituary?

Yes! Video tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to celebrate someone's life. You can create one using photos, music, and narration.

Copy and paste the link to the online obituary into your social media post. You can also share a photo of the deceased with a brief message announcing their passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary archive?

An archive provides a permanent record of past obituaries for research purposes, such as genealogy or historical research.

Can I request a copy of an old obituary from a funeral home?

If the funeral home still has records from that time period, they may be able to provide you with a copy of the original obituary.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues surrounding the person's death or personal life, it's best to err on the side of caution and avoid including potentially hurtful details.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes or song lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add depth and personality to the obituary.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

Drawing up an outline beforehand can help guide your writing process. You may also consider asking a friend or family member for assistance or seeking guidance from a professional writer.
